Let’s skip the part where I apologize for not blogging in months. 🙂
I love to read. I always have, but over the past two years I have been so busy that I’ve probably only read about four books. I realized a couple of weeks ago that I must make time to read. Right now I’m slowly working my way through Imagine by Jonah Lehrer. I highly recommend this book if you have the slightest interest in how the mind works or creativity. I have a tiny crush on Lehrer because he is a regular guest on the best podcast ever — Radiolab.
This morning I wasn’t reading, I was watching the local morning news when I saw this commercial. It is a fantastically happy. Reading Rainbow was a huge part of my childhood and seeing good old Lavar reappear in an effort to inspire reading was joyful. While nostalgia tends to be a drug for me, I don’t think the childhood tug made me stop in my tracks. It was the fact that it was an example of how brilliant and powerful advertising can be, when combining simple cultural ideas and a good cause. It feels so earnest. I love it and had to share it. Also, the message is true — reading and imagination go hand-in-hand, and what career doesn’t need imagination?
